SPEAKER: Professor Michael Byers, Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law & Academic Director, Liu Institute for Global Issues, University of British Columbia.
Dr. Byers graduated from the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in 1984. He holds degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, McGill University, Cambridge University and Oxford University.
Prior to July 2004, he was Professor of Law and Director of Canadian Studies at Duke University in North Carolina. His work focuses on the interaction of international law and international politics, particularly with respect to security issues, law-making, and Canada-United States relations.
He is the author or editor of Custom, Power and the Power of Rules (Cambridge University Press, 1999), The Role of Law in International Politics (Oxford University Press, 2000) and United States Hegemony and the Foundations of International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2003). He is a regular contributor to the London Review of Books.
