Flu Pandemic: Hype or Threat?

According to the World Health Organization, if the Avian flu now being experienced in Southeast Asia were to mutate and spread to humans it could potentially kill 50 million people worldwide.

It has been decades since a world flu pandemic has broken out and experts are warning that one is coming, it is only a matter of time. Would the public health system be able to cope with such an outbreak? What is the Chinook Health Region doing to prepare? Is this a lot of hype or a real threat?

Dr. Conway Brewerton, Medical Officer of Health for the Chinook Health Region will give an overview on how serious the threat is and outline steps that are being taken by the Chinook Health Region.

Biography: Dr. Conway Brewerton, Medical Officer of Health for the Chinook Health Region, has a wealth of clinical and public health experience. He has previously served as Medical Officer of Health for Red Deer Regional Health Unit and as Assistant Director of the Harris County Health Department in Houston, Texas. He has a Master of Public Health from John Hopkins School of Public Hygiene and Public Health. He received his M.D. with Distinction from the University of Alberta.
