Mental health, Schizophrenia and substance use problems and illnesses affect people from all walks of life – our parents, siblings, children, friends, co-workers, neighbours and often, ourselves. The costs of inadequate planning and inconsistent access to mental health and substance use services are high – both personal and financial. People with mental health and substance use problems and illnesses face stigma and discrimination. They contend with obstacles to completing education, pursuing employment opportunities and obtaining adequate housing.
The speakers will talk about schizophrenia, mental illness and PTSD and how those affected should accept reality as is, rather than fighting it. They will be speaking about stigma and the 12 step programs that are used to deal with these illnesses, while describing some of their own experiences and argue that the ultimate goal ought to be to reduce the prevalence of addiction and mental health issues in Alberta through health promotion and prevention activities. Providing quality assessment, treatment and support services to Albertans if needed are also paramount. What is currently being done to achieve these goals?
Speaker: Catherine and Austin Mardon
A retired lawyer, Catherine Mardon is dedicated to assisting people affected by mental illness and disability, and frequently advocates on their behalf. In addition, she opens up her own home as a place of solace to those in need of comfort.

Austin is currently Assistant Adjunct Professor with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, and was recently appointed as an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the University of Alberta Department of Psychiatry – the first time someone with schizophrenia has been appointed to such a position.
